If one is calling a not (more) existing web page, the web server results the error message error 404. There are also personalised error pages, which replace the error 404 message and even they can contain links to further sites.
The error page should contain that meta tag with the entry noindex, follow to prevent that the error page appears in the index, however at the same time all links on the error page are followed.
